Award season is the highlight of the year for movie, music and television. It is also a great time for fans to get their fixes of their favorite stars. However, one byproduct of awards season is that some celebrities make themselves look pretty foolish. Of course, the rest of the world is not complaining, because what is better than getting a laugh at the expense of the entertainment elite?
Jennifer Lawrence shoots over their heads
At the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence exclaimed, “I beat Meryl Streep!” when she took the stage to accept an award. Some people got the joke, but perhaps Jennifer Lawrence should have taken into account that the rest of young Hollywood is, well, not that bright. Courthouse favorite Lindsay Lohan quickly tweeted in response, “And no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep.” She was not the only one who thought it was some kind of dig. However, the young starlet was quoting, “The First Wives Club.” Besides the fact that it was true that she beat Meryl Streep, it was a bit of humor. Too bad it soared over the heads of half of Hollywood and most bloggers who could not be bothered to figure out what Jennifer was talking about. So, this fail had quite the ripple effect.
Kanye West being ridiculous
When it comes to music awards, Kanye West can always be counted on to be ungracious and awful. It is impossible to point to one award season because he has embarrassed himself during so many of them. He first stormed a stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards and complained to audiences everywhere that he should have won the award being presented. The following year, he criticized award shows once again and said that he lost to Brittney Spears at the VMAs because his, “skin’s not right.” In 2009, he turned several heads when he had an outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs, saying Beyonce should have won the award. Several people, including Beyonce, were appalled. On top of this, he has made several statements in the press that show just how narcissistic an artist he is and has angrily left many an award show.
Another rapper gets . . . sophisticated
50 Cent was not thrilled in 2004 when he lost the Grammy for best new artist to band Evanescence. He actually came on stage, but most of what he said was lost to the audience at home. He did later state that he would never come back to the Grammys again. Amy Lee Evanescence played it off, making it much less of a fail than it could have been, but it definitely put a wrench in the moment. Amy thanked 50 for whatever it was he said to her, looking rather embarrassed and saying, “What did I do? This is my first time!” She kept smiling and rightly laughing at the disgruntled rapper until she finally got a chance to make an acceptance speech with her band.
Mishaps, debauchery and rude musicians are all in a season’s work in the movie and music industry. For some audiences, they are the only thing that makes the awards worth watching. For others, they are something to gasp and blog about. For Hollywood stars, they are likely run of the mill in a town so wacky and celebrity obsessed that celebrities can rarely leave their homes without being hounded. It is no wonder they get caught doing or saying the wrong thing so often. Just look at the acceptance speeches Madonna has given over the past thirty years.
